    Hi,

Just wondering if anyone here had good or bad experiences dealing with Nishiki Nursery? Looking at their website for a couple of Japanese Maples.

I searched the forums but didn't see anything on them other than the Maple links.

    Thanks!

    B

Re: Is Nishiki Nursery a member of the maple society?

I don't think commenting about a nursery is a good practice unless there are extenuating circumstances. This forum is picked up by all the crawlers and it would be like putting up a bill board on route 66 if it were negative.

I would look at the links and buy from someone that is well known. This is especially true if you are just starting out or you just need one focal point tree. I have been taken many times. Of those experence I wish I could go back and dig up several trees. I still have one big one that is still in a pot and I still cannot decide what it is going to do for me. The mental stress of being screwed is not worth it. You may find, that if you spend the few dollars to be a member of the maple society you would learn who is who, and buy an even more stunning tree then any one else in Ohio or your mid west where ever. Is this nursery a member of the maple society? If not I would have to ask why? What if an arborist was not a member of the National Arborist Association? Why would a profession not be a member of their own society or origination. The only reason could be is that they are not a specalist. da da da dats all folks, dang rabbit

    Hey Blunky,

I recall getting a nice plant from Nishiki a while back.

Nishiki is mentioned a couple of times here.

Which tree you most interested in?

I think I disagree with Richard. Not sure how "extenuating" is to be interpreted there. There are sellers who are plainly dishonest, knowingly sell infected, poorly maintained stock etc and as an enthusiasts forum it is appropriate to share this information or personal experience.

Richard, I agree with your main point, but I would like to comment on your example involving arborists.

I am an arborist, and while NAA membership is common, the International Society of Arboriculture is still the dominant professional society for arborists, and the ISA's certified arborist program is the standard by which an arborist's qualifications should be evaluated.

The ISA has the standard certified arborist program, as well as specialized certifications for utility arboriculture, municipal arboriculture, and a Board Certified Master Arborist certification.

It is common for ISA certification to be a requirement for employment with top arborist companies, and for government and consulting work.

I don't imagine you intended to say the NAA was preferable to the ISA, but wanted to clarify that for people.

Thanks for the extra info, we all need to have the best arborist we can find and your info is appreciated.

Can you help me clear something up now. No one seems to know the angle of the edge of an ax. I think that is pretty important, and I want to finally know what it is.

Well, I guess I didn't expect this sort of response, which is OK I suppose. I was just hoping for some reassurance that the nursery I asked about were good to deal with. I haven't really bought any trees online so I wanted some more info. I know davesgarden has reviews on some nurseries, but nothing on Nishiki. I just figured that if anyone had a good experience that would help me decide. The lack of feedback, other than from poetry to burn caused me to go with another vendor.

I saw that thread on ebay sellers and figured it would be OK to ask my question.

Thanks for the responses though. I got a tree on the way so I'm happy. :)

Reading between the lines is a useful skill on the forum Blunk.

Let us know how it turns out with your purchase.

Private messages are more appropriate when you want a more opinionated reply. I would enable that benefit when using this forum. ټ

This makes my day, I have been trying to get this right for fifteen years. Some have said 25 degrees, thanks again.

Re: Is Nishiki Nursery a member of the maple society?

Before you get too excited Richard, beware.......I was joking. This forum is lacking emoticons to help flush out sarcasm.

I'm not sure there is a standard angle for axe blades. Most info on sharpening I've seen does indicate that a blade angle of between 10-15 degrees is best, so my joke figures should work.

    Sorry for the confusion.

10 degrees is very sharp angle, the sharper the angle the weaker the edge, I belive an angle of 170 degrees would be much better.

They have nice plants, and the first year secound year system is pretty straight forward. I have seen him on ebay every year selling ultra rare 2ft tall multi branched three year old koto ito komachi's that look alot like koto no ito's but other than that there should be no surprise's. eastforknursery.com has beautiful tree's and she takes pictures of her own tree's so you can see what you are getting. Very pro from her packaging to her plants and a good price for the size.

Type the name of the nursery on DavesGarden.com. They have a lot of mail order nurseries listed with positive, neutral, or negative ratings from people who have bought from them in the past. good luck
