Recently buy dad bought a hamburg vine which then got meinterested in vines. So i went down to local garden centre and bought a vitis outdoor vine which i was assured was one of the best. Its only about 2 foot tall but already has a bunch of grapes on and cost me 40 quid. My question is one how do i find out exactly what type of vine it is and secondly i want to plant this vine in the ground what is the best way to do this ie when where and what compost to use and does it need feeding. Also whats this pruning lark, ie when and where, please help and sorry for being so new to this and having no knowledge at all

Hi Kev - best on finding out the type of vine is to go back to where it was bought, and ask them for details; if they don't know, get them to ask their retail suppliers. No, don't just ask, insist that they inform you, and if they don't, then demand your money back. For £40, they really ought to know what cultivar it is (and it had better be a premium quality one at that price, too!).

On pruning, try doing a google search for 'viticulture'. Might also be worth learning some French as there may be more info available in French given the importance of wine growing in the French economy.
