Hi so, short little explanation, I've had this cacti for well over a year now and lately I've noticed that it started curving towards my window? I was just wondering if this was totally normal or not, and if it's not normal how i could fix the issue. Please ignore the fact that on the picture it's on the ground, i wanted to make sure that you could see it clearly.
Welcome to the forum! How large the window is and what's its orientation related to the noon sun? My wild guess is, that there is pretty dim at current time of year, so the plant bends towards the window for better light exposure.
Well it's not really a window peer say, it's a double glass door that leads to a very small balcony if you could even call it a balcony, I'm not really sure how to describe it. Though i won't really be able to really tell you the orientation I'm kinda dumb and English is not my mother language but the "window" is on the side and when it's mid day the sun easily shines straight at my desk that on the opposite of the window. But if it is just a light issues well then that's always good to know it's not something more serious.
I agree with the previous posting. That bookcase is also restricting the light it could get from above. The cactus is doing very well considering the location. If that's the best you can do for light, it's what it will have to live with. Its shape should become even more distended over time, with the arms getting longer and thinner. The colour looks good and it looks healthy. I had a cactus like that, a Mammillaria, that looked very unusual because of the lack of sun. It lived for about 25 years, but died about three years ago. I posted it for ID several years ago. https://forums.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/threads/eriosyce-esmeraldana-or-else-what.91159/
If there is enough light for the cactus to survive, all you need to do to keep it straight is to rotate it regularly. It will try to lean towards the light.
@vitog, I was going to say that, but then I wondered whether there are plants that don't want to keep having to adjust to what amounts to a changing light source, that would suffer when you do that. I do keep turning my houseplants around, though mostly not my balcony plants, for various reasons.
Light deficiency is a SERIOUS issue! Plants need light. You should integrate grow lights into your plant shelf, otherwise there is too dim for plants. Plants aren't just a decorative element, that can be placed anywhere you like, they are living thing and need certain preconditions to survive. Light is one of the most important ones, as plant needs it for photosynthesis.
I'm sorry i know it's important, what i was trying to say is that I'm glad it's not actually dying or falling over because it can't support itself but I'll definitely see if i can add grow lights to give them more light. I can't really relocate it, my room is really not that big and i can't really put anywhere else other than this bookshelf though i could perhaps put it on the top so it can have more light but that's about it.
Your plants are starving for light. I'm not an expert of cactuses, but I guess your cactus is a Mammillaria and should look similar to this: https://kylesplants.com/products/mammillaria-yucatanensis But because of lack of sufficient light, its growth is etiolated.
