I'm looking for a tree for my front yard, I can't seem to find a species that fills all the requirement and constraints. Any help would be much appreciated!

Zone: 8a maritime, wet winters and dry summers
Height: max 30-40ft (10m) or less
    Soil: moist acidic
    Sun: part sun
    Fall color: pink-red-orange

Site can get fairly windy and its close to the shore

Would prefer something to contrast a large birch tree in the yard

    Strong horizontal branching preferred.

I'm not opposed to a genus outside of Acer.

It will be lining a sidewalk, or if more of an open growth multi-stemmed trunk it could be placed a little further back.

    Thanks!

Japanese maples are popular here, as elsewhere. Hundreds of different cultivars to choose from. Evergreen Cemetery has large examples from older plantings in the north end, this part of the memorial park is a special place for trees in general. If you tour your neighborhood you will doubtless see numbers of them there also.
