HI all I am new to this forum and joined because I have this lovely plant in my office and its not doing too well. I dont know what kind of plant it is, we water it about once a week and spray a water mist on it every day...God bless it but it is still browning at the end of the leaves and also seems to be drooping as well. if anyone out there can help me save this plant I would really appreciate the help...
I'm not 100% positive, but it looks like Dypsis lutescens (Areca Palm). With palms, you might always have "some" drying of the ends. There are a few reasons the ends could be drying so much. Hard-water use containing chlorine/fluoride, being in the wrong light, not being watered correctly, possible low humidity. Give it good bright indirect light. Direct hot sun can burn the fronds. Setting out water in an open jug type container will dissipate the chlorine after a couple of days which could help, or, you could use rain, or bottled water. Water it enough so it comes flowing out the bottom, then empty the saucer of excess water. You don't want the soil wet all the time, or to dry out. You want the soil a little on the moist side at all times. I water mine usually once a week, sometimes I may skip a week, it depends on the soil. Let the top start to feel almost dry an inch or so down into the soil before watering it again. No need to mist. Go half strength or less when fertilizing It's always a good idea to ck for pest like spidermites.
Milktray Since it is an Office Plant, maybe it has been ignored more than you know. As with the Big Box stores - sometimes watering was not done regularily or correctly so maybe the core has dried out. Put it in a bucket of warm water during your next work day - let it soak up and rehydrate that core for several hrs, then let it drain ALL excess water out and see what happens. Bluewing is correct in wondering what kind of water is being used. Additives put in your water supply, is good for people, but not necessarily good for the plants.
Thank you all very much for your help. You are right I use ordinary tap water and yes it would have chlorine and flouride. I read somewhere over the weekend that water from a fish tank. ie: the water you remove once a month should be used to water plants. Interesting idea! Thanks I will give it a good soak and see how we get on, again thank you....Milktray
