I have had limited success with this variety and have no problem getting it to grow, the problem is the leaf drop every year. I have two large 6 foot tall plants that grow in a protected section of our garden, but yearly they loose most of their new growth. This year I cut one plant back drastically and it is happy. Any suggestions?

This plant has a tendancy to shed its' lower leaves if grown in considerable shade; so perhaps you could move them for a portion of the year into a sunnier spot. Plants don't mind renewal pruning and this should stimulate growth. With a little more sun the trunk should get thicker and the whole outline of the plant should improve.

You may be encouraged to read an article about this plant on the web:

Thanks for contacting us. Good luck to you in growing this plant. It is indeed a useful addition to the garden all year long - beautiful indeed.

The question was about loss of new growth.
