We have 7 big madrone on the lower half of our acre. All about 50 to 70 feet tall. Here is an image of one that I really like the trunk flare of...
Definitely not going to enter it into the competition this year !! Even Oregon's champion is 283" circumference and 84' high. The one in the image is just 128" circumference below the fork in branching. The madrone two trees behind it is still only 135" circumference at 4.5' up. So like just half of the state champion. Although a rating system for shrubs and vines would have to be a lot different due to the habit variations, I may have a contender for champion Poison-oak... 3.5" diameter trunk. First visble foliage well over 100 feet - vine probably about 170' tall, as I've seen 2" diameter trunk vines from 100' to 140' on 3 trees all in proximity.
Here's a few Madrone contenders posted on the PNW palm forum. Cheers, LPN. http://www.cloudforest.com/northwest/forum/5387.html
