Living on the North Shore we seldom get mushrooms, until this fall, now we have a lawn peppered with happy mushrooms, which appeared almost overnight. Any correction necessary?

Lime the lawn, or leave it. They won't be magic up where you are. It's probably because of all this monsoon like rain we're having. Some-times they'll come up if there's decomposing bits of wood in your soil, or tree roots.

not all mushrooms are safe to touch! and unless you use cow manure on your lawn, they are probably not magic. if you are unsure about if they are safe to touch, try looking at the shroomery, for pictures of local wild shrooms. putting out enough lime to kill the mycilium will have effects on your lawn and water, if you use a well, so this might not be a good idea....

In 50 years of mushroom picking, I've never experienced, heard of, or read about any mushroom that isn't safe to pick for examination. Cagreene must have gotten that bit of misinformation from the Web.

Daniel, that article describes unusual reactions to mushrooms that will only affect a tiny portion of the population due to an allergic reaction. Both of those mushrooms are eaten by many people, although I wouldn't recommend it for the Amanita. Such rare reactions are no reason for the general public to avoid touching mushrooms. Should we avoid legumes because a few people are adversely affected by peanuts?

No, I don't think people should be scared of touching mushrooms. I was just disproving an absolute.

We are in the same 'boat'. We live in Langley and there are now wild mushrooms all over our lawn. Not too concerned about them ... but it would be nice to have them go away as we do have young kids that think they are cool to play with.
