I have a 5 foot tall Red Abyssinian Banana (Musa ventricosum Maurelii) in a pot. I have moved it into a cool basement next to a glass sliding door and trimmed off most of the leaves. The discussion forum talks about outdoor plants, digging up etc. What should I do to overwinter it? I also have "Hardy Banana" - same question. Thx!

Hi Peter--you've probably seen the previous threads describing forcing the banana plant into dormancy by cutting off leaves and letting it dry out in a cool basement. I'm thinking the potted red banana will work very similarly.

The hardy bananas seem totally root hardy hereabouts and could be left in the ground. If potted, I would keep it close to the house until spring, and avoid letting the pot contents freeze solid (bring inside during arctic snaps).

Thanks - I did read the other posts but was worried. I'll wait till it's sunny and put the hardy banana back outside close to the wall and leave the big one inside to dry out.
