This is the first time I have seen this type of mushroom pop up. Originally I thought it was a pine cone. The stem on the ground was hollow. Can any confirm it’s a morel and type?

Yes, it's one of the black morels, probably Morchella importuna, which typically grows in wood chips in newly landscaped areas.

Thanks for the ID. Not that I am going to eat it but are these North American Morels generally edible. The wood nuggets was installed last year.

All morels are edible, but some people are allergic to them; so, only a small amount should be eaten the first time. And they should be cooked thoroughly. These landscape morels are commercially cultivated in China and other places.
