This is the first time I have seen this type of mushroom pop up. Originally I thought it was a pine cone. The stem on the ground was hollow. Can any confirm it’s a morel and type? Thanks Joe
Yes, it's one of the black morels, probably Morchella importuna, which typically grows in wood chips in newly landscaped areas.
Thanks for the ID. Not that I am going to eat it but are these North American Morels generally edible. The wood nuggets was installed last year.
All morels are edible, but some people are allergic to them; so, only a small amount should be eaten the first time. And they should be cooked thoroughly. These landscape morels are commercially cultivated in China and other places.
