I have a money tree (pach) and recently it has been turning yellowish brown on the leaves, drooping, and leaves falling off, I have heard that this can be do to normal cycle of the plant, but I am unsure. The planet is watered monthly with reverse osimoses water bought from walmart and fert every 3 watering I just sprayed it also I never do that. It is winter right now in MA and I wonder if the lack of humidty is the cause it is very dry. T.he only window availible is next to the heater vents and temp is 68-75 dgree's farheight. I has also noticed that one of the trucks is "hallow" I fear this is rot. When I water once a month I soak it and let it drain before placing back is this wrong. plus i do see new growth on sides of trucks.
are you bottom watering? because most money trees will rot when top watered. these trees also need more light than your window in winter can probably provide. i use indoor sunlight bulbs, bought at any home hardware type store for about $3-$5 and fit in regular lamp. they use same kw as reg bulbs. the hollow trunk is dead, and should be removed close to the healthy growth without cutting into it. i never buy plants from nurseries or grocery stores, ( with few exceptions ) but when i do get given one, i remove the soil, wash the roots and let the roots sit in a fungicidal wash while i prepare the soil. if i have to re-use the soil from the nursery, i bake it in the oven at 450 degrees, for 4 hrs to kill any unwanted guests mould/fungus or non-beneficial bacteria and weeds. i don't recommend spraying this type of plant IF you are having rot issues. do not feed until new healthy growth is present. good luck.
OK so how do you bottom water I don't believe it's anything to do with the soil the lighting is probably a problem. My concern with bottom watering is how do i do it without getting soil everywhere it's in a plastic container for house plants and the roted trunk is near the bottom the outer layer just peeled right off it was fine spring2012 to just last week. I bought it from Lowell's and replanted it right away I didn't soke the roots, but I didn't reuse any of the soil except what was stuck to the roots I used caticus soil
bottom watering does take more time, but when done right you water far less than top watering.when top watering your soil becomes hard, air pockets form, water runs down the sides of the pot, missing the root zone completely, often only soaking the soil for the first 2 inches. bottom watering causes the soil to act like a sponge, absorbing the water evenly from bottom up, insuring even coverage when applying food etc. to bottom water i usually keep my fussy plants in their watering dish at all times, i add half the mass of the pot, so a 1 gallon pot gets 2 litres. ( 1/2), if there is still water in the dish after 15 min. i empty dish. some hard soil wont absorb the water easily, so use a spray bottle and wet the surface, lightly, this will help the soil draw the water up. how much water your plants need will really depends on how much light your plants get, too much and they drown, too little and they dehydrate. each plant is diffident you must find the balance. cheers!
Thanks I'm not sure how bigg the pot is but you just put water in the dish and the soil sucks in upward against gravity or did I miss something
as long as your plants pot has holes in the bottom this will work fine! lol, some pots dont come with holes, and you must make your own...but yes, thats the gist of the idea...
I had no idea I could do that, and thanks for all your help very enlightening, I hope this tips work out
