Moldy Cycad Seeds

Discussion in 'Outdoor Tropicals' started by Unregistered, Sep 11, 2005.

  1. Does anyone have any suggestions on stopping mold from growing on my seeds?
I have cycad seeds in a human incubator and 90% have germinated only to be attacked by mold. They are in peat pellets and are at 90 degrees with about 70% humidity.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    1. Don't use peat - it holds far too much water. Try a well-drained sand/gravel-based mix (a mixture sold for cactus growing should be OK), and sterilise it before use.
    2. 90°C is far too hot - that will kill the seeds in short order. Aim for around 30°.
    3. Keep the humidity lower. High humidity encourages mould
    4. Plant the seeds singly (ideally, one per pot) so that is one gets infected, it can't pass the disease on to others so easily, and keep them somewhere well ventilated
