My garden is in the lower reaches of Trimble Hill in West Point Grey, Vancouver, but it has a southern exposure. I have an ongoing battle with liverwort in my lawn, particularly in areas of shade, compaction, and heavy moisture content - most notably against concrete paving and plastic lawn edging. What is the easiest way of mitigating these conditions and/or discouraging regrowth of this pernicious weed?
Wendy According to Pojar & Mackinnon "Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast" it may be killed by an application of a chemical called "Panacide". I don't know if its avaiable to you in BC. Since most liverworts seem to like acidic soil I would check out this site: http://www.ehow.com/info_8706179_lime-kill-moss.html In looking thru several sites, an application of lime might help. I googled "how to kill Liverworts" and got several ideas. Including the above site. barb
Thank you Barbara for your reply to my query about ridding my garden of liverwort. I am already attempting to aerate the soil in the affected areas after removing the liverwort and planting grass. The addition of lime is a good idea too. I think that drainage is particularly relevant because most of the affected areas are adjacent to concrete pathways and edging materials.
