I have a number of 50' cedars in my backyard and one of them has suddenly turned quite brown (from the top down). Looking around my neighbourhood, I see that I am not the only one with this problem... 2 doors down has a few that look quite near death and elsewhere in the neighbourhood there are several other large brown cedars. I have consulted an arborist about my ailing tree and he said it could be any number of things (probably fungal in nature), and did not comment about the other trees in my neighbourhood. I also consulted a tree removal company that said there are a lot of similar trees dying around here because it's just been too dry these last 5 years. Anybody else have anything more enlightening to suggest? I live in Ocean Park area of South Surrey.
My money is on lack of sufficient water. Thuja plicata trees have been dying up and down the east coast of Vancouver Island for several years now as a result of summer drought. It's heartbreaking to witness. Here is one of many articles you can find online: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/brit...red-cedars-death-dry-climate-change-1.5134262
