The 'Akebono' on the SW corner of W. 64th and Ash will have a hard time catching up to the rest of the 'Akebono' gang lining W. 64th. Its Colt rootstock is going to insist on being carried along. We've just missed Colt's peak, but there are a few flowers left with their prominent stamens that differentiate them from the 'Akebono' blossoms.
The single Somei-yoshino interrupting the 'Akebono' line on the south side of W. 64th (west of Ash), is doing very well at March 26, 2022. Look at those shoots it's sending out. Little knobs on the twig in the last picture for Wendy.
I saw some little knobs on an 'Akebono' today. But not a lot of them. :) I love how different that one 'Somei-yoshino' looks from the 'Akebono' behind it.
This 'Shirotae' is already in full bloom on the east side of Osler, north of W. 70th at April 1, 2022. It would be an exemplary example of Shirotae's spreading branching growth were it not for that extra trunk rising off one side and which does not carry any Shirotae blossoms.
Date: April 17, 2022 Location: Between W70th to W71st along Hudson and Montcalm Type: Kanzan Finally had a chance to check out the Kanzan along Hudson between W70th and W71st. So beautiful with vivid pink. Looks like at it’s full bloom. It must be warmer around here compared to East around my neighborhood cause Killarney area wasn’t blooming as much as Marpole area.
I was sent by a friend to look at some plums, and on the way I passed this nice 'Beni-shidare' in a front yard at Angus and 58th, soon to be on the map.
Marpole's 'Sendai-shidare' is looking very green, as it has passed peak bloom at April 5, 2024. On the north side of W.66th, just west of Ash.
[7429 Angus Dr. - near 58th] This 'Beni-Shidare' may look average on its own, but the surrounding environment—heathers, daisies, etc.—makes it look really beautiful.
'Takasago' is in full bloom at April 5, 2025. On the north side of W.66th, just west of Ash. The bloom is looking paler than before.
The two 'Shirotae' trees in Ash Park (SE Ash/W66) are in full bloom at April 5, 2025. Both trees are shaping up, to live up to their Mount Fuji name.
April 02, 2025 Winona Park - 'Akebono' I understand why Google has Yukon St at W 59th Avenue named as 'Cherry Blossom Avenue' now :)
Another drive-by. Our map is missing a lot of 'Kanzan' streets in Marpole, north and south of 70th between Granville and Oak. We just picked one to photograph, saw this group on French Street a block south of 70th, so we drove around the block to get the photo. It's not an unbroken row, but looks impressive from the north end of the block even so.
A few blocks south, on 63rd from Cambie to Yukon, and then from Manitoba to Ontario, are 'Kanzan' on both sides of the street. Cambie to Yukon Manitoba to Ontario
The four 'Whitcomb' trees at the entrance to the parking lot of Marpole Community Centre, SE Oak and W.59th, are in bloom at February 12, 2026.
If it is possible for a cherry tree to be ugly, I'm afraid 'Spire' would qualify. The two trees on the north side of W. 63rd, west of Columbia are in full bloom at March 30, 2026, but much good it does them as Douglas Justice does not like them . The features of 'Spire': small cup-shaped flowers accompanied by bronze-red to bright red emerging leaves.
No fooling. IIRC, you have "Cherry" Ingram to thank for this cultivar. And also for popularizing the grafting of ornamental cherries onto Prunus avium rootstock, a combined double-whammy here.
'Shirotae' overlooking the playing field at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary (west side Heather, between W54 and W.57, is wearing its Mt. Fuji blooming look at April 2, 2026. Green leaves emerging with the double-white, fragrant flowers.
It is unfortunate that such a beautiful Sakura is forced by its householder to look like a stumpy giant mushroom. 'Sendai-shidare' is in full bloom on the north side of W.66th, just west of Ash at April 2, 2026. Some fragrance. The flower shots show the 5-petal, white blossoms with their raggedly edges and long narrow sepals; also the bronze-green of the emerging leaves.
Several 'Takasago' trees are blooming along W. 66, west of Ash at April 2, 2026. Some blossoms showing the red centres that indicate aging blossoms.
'The one remaining 'Mikuruma-gaeshi' tree (of three) on the south side of W. 63rd, west of Ash, is just past peak bloom at April 9, 2026. 'Mikuruma-gaeshi' shares 'Takasago' s reputation for being an ugly tree with gorgeous flowers. It is notable for some short-stem flowers that are so closely packed along a stalk that the inflorescence almost looks like a raceme (flower cluster with the separate flowers attached by short equal stalks at equal distances along a central stem; from Latin racemus ‘bunch of grapes’). Well, those bluish streaks on some petals do look like they could be lightly brushed with grape juice.
