Somei-yoshino are in bloom lining outside the Historic Joy Kogawa House on 64th at French.

The young 'Akebono' in the front yard has some flowers open.

Here is a single 'Akebono' just starting to bloom on Cartier south of 64th, either low grafted or on its own roots.

But this lovely pair of 'Akebono' are in full bloom a few blocks away at 71st and Hudson. I wonder if they are on their own roots - the buds from the rootstock look somewhat similar to me to the buds from the trunk.

more from yesterdays bike ride. This one in full blossom, a white cloud effect, heavily flowered and it was very windy but the petals were holding one. it is just in the oakridge border neighborhood area i think being on the north west corner of 60th and Ontario. Steep part of the hill so I was walking by this point. again I am calling it 'Akebono', but not sure. I have a hard time distinguishing the 'Akebono's from the' Somei-Yoshino's. but this one lots of soft pink on the reverse and the little heart shape indentation at the top. so delicate!

Unbelievable Umineko! The three trees on the west side of Oak street, just south of W. 70th, are past peak bloom, turning red-eyed, and dropping flowers on March 30, 2020. The Seagull is leaving the building early.

Akebono row on the north side of W.70th, west of Granville, on March 30, 2020. Looks like a family grouping, with the largest and oldest up front, and the youngest at the back.

Several fine-looking Accolade trees inside a corporate private parking area at West 75th Avenue, east of Angus. Tricky without a vehicle; tricky with a vehicle, as road narrows downwards with blind spots. Best access off SW Marine Drive to Angus.
Nice view, though trees passed peak bloom at March 30, 2020.

This Akebono is for Wendy's fine tree collection. Just up the street from the Accolades on W. 75th and Angus.

Thanks, Anne. These were first posted in Kerrisdale, but they belong here in Marpole, so I have changed that info on the map. I can't move the original posting, else some links would stop working, since the page number seems to have to be part of the link.

We are starting to find some good-looking 'Akebono' trees around, low grafted so they look like real trees, branching out appropriately. I think Anne is referring to the thread in the Ornamental Cherries forum: Appreciation: - Cherries that look like real trees

Isn't that amazing, to get such beautiful blossom photos from trees that look like that?

one 'Shirofugen' in among the 'Kanzan'. This one on the Masumi Mitsui Greenway. At the north east corner where the bike path intersects with Granville St and Park Ave and the Greenway turns south. This tree was labelled! :) but you can see the pair of leafy pistals that look a bit like elephant trunks. Douglas Justice notes that a synonym for Shiro Fugen is 'Fugenzo' and that means 'Fugen Elephant', an allusion the famous 1480's Buddhist monk, Fugen who rode upon white elephants. My notes have that they start in a pink bud with bronze leaf, then white flower, bronze leaf then in 2 weeks pink flower and green leaves....will have to bike by next week to see where they are in their cycle.
