I just recently had to have a large maple tree removed from my property as the stock was splittimg in several places. As well, some of the larger branches were splitting.
We left about 10 feet of the trunk standing. Someone told us that we had to remove the bark and paint the cuts where the branches were removed. Is this really necessary ? If so. Why ? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch. Pat

If you want to keep the stump, say as a resource for wildlife then you would just leave it standing. But perhaps the tree is not dead, in which case the stump will sprout new branches. Some of these may be liable to break off later, when large and heavy.

I appreciate your response. So what you are saying is if I leave it alone, it will sprout new branches. Thats cool. If I take the bark off of it, will that kill the stump ? I was hoping to put bird houses and feeders in what's left of the tree. Pat
