I have a collection of 20 Japanese maples, most grown from seed or seedling from local nursery which propagated them in British Columbia. I've seen quite a few JMs wilt and what I've found is all were imported from a different region and once they're transplanted in your garden they suffer shock from the drastically different soil and die from soil/root shock. If you want to avoid this happening I recommend buying JMs that were grown in your region and not imported from other regions with different soil types. JMs have very sensitive root systems and respond negatively to unfamiliar soil.
