    A. Pictum ‘Akikaze Nishiki’
    A. Shirasawanum ‘Bashful’

I hadn't really thought about it much. I was expecting to go out this spring and see what was available, until I got an email yesterday. It was from my go-to mail order nursery and I noticed that they had something that I have never seen locally so I ordered one:

    A. Japonicum "Dancing Peacock"

I just mail order purchased a Kurenai Jishi in November. I was disappointed since it was 6’ tall. I had expected a 2’ tall tree since it’s described as a shrubby dwarf. Hope you get a slightly shorter one in 2022.

Interesting. I ordered one from Conifer Kingdom which will ship in the spring. It's a #7 so I'm expecting a 3-4" tree but would love something larger. I'm constantly raising the canopy on all my maples anyhow, so I guess I'm just partial to more tree-like structures rather than shrubby ones.

Can you post a photo of yours?

I bought a maple last year under the name "taro yama" but it looks like kurenai Jishi ...
Taro Yama or Kurenai jishi? What do you think? Here are some photos:

    My "shopping list" ?...

100 hectares (about 250 acres) of well-exposed, slightly acidic land where summers are sunny but not too hot. A real winter, with a few days of snow.

Preferrably with some small hills on one side, and a rather flat land on the other.

My shopping list for tomorrow : buy a Euromillion ticket, and hope to win the jackpot !

    ;°D

Seriously, I don't have enough space for more trees, and I always yield in, and buy "the one that I must have"...

Went to see my doctor today, told him about my addiction to tobacco (30 cancerettes a day for 50 years is quite a few, innit?), much harder to control, and more damaging than maplemania... ^_^ Gave me prescriptions for lung XRays, blod sampling, etc. and told me "hope I'll see you before the next 3 years"...

Huh huh, we sometimes think we're undestructible...

@MapleZen , from left to right, Shishigashira, Kurenai Jishi, Exuberance, Inaba Shidare.

The Kurenai Jishi is about 6ft tall. It arrived with autumn leaves and they appeared true to the cultivar. It’s just much taller and narrower than I expected.

Great looking plants. That looks like shishigashira on the left and the kurenai in the middle. I agree it does look taller and narrower than I would expect, but perhaps it was over fertilized and the lower branches were pruned?

I'm finding Lover of Maples is a lot like me, we tend to gravitate towards the non-palmatums. I want almost everything on his list.

@Worldly_Wrangler your comment 'tend to gravitate towards the non-palmatums' is something I'm leaning towards more and more these days aswell.
It does come to a stage where there is so little difference in cultivars, that other varieties IMO give so much more interest. Perhaps this might be a trend for 2022.!!!!!?

@LoverOfMaples did you get Acer Palmatum 'Lily Pad' when it was available at MrMaple? It didn't seeem as impressive as 'Yuki Yama' so I opted for the later.

These are some wonderful maples. I think 'Hana chiru sato' is the same as 'Wakoh nishiki' by most accounts. Mine is alive but sort of refuses to grow. I think it's grafted on pseudoplatanus.

'Sunglow' is such a great maple, it always looks fab and everyone admires it. It doesn't really burn, just sort of goes bronze. The only down side is aphids adore it.

Our 'Kumoi nishiki' froze badly last spring, first year in the ground. It actually looked fine during the year, but I saw yesterday it only has live bark about 1/3 around the stem above the graft. Lots of lip wood though. I'm trying some burlap wrap on a few trees that are really prone to freezing, or damaged, this is one of the ones I wrapped yesterday.

My partial wishlist is (and omitting the various ones I know don't exist here!)

    A. saccharum 'Legacy'
    A. saccharum 'Newton Sentry'
    A. platanoides 'Faasan's Black'
    Acer 'Berrima Bridge'

A friend offered to send wood from A. platanoides 'Merkury' and 'Walderseei', but I don't have any understock ready/ I really want both of these, especially since our Walderseei died. But I think I will have to get some bare root understock and try and graft them next winter.

Hey @Worldly_Wrangler. I did. I have a special thing for mikawa types. I can't wait until 'Koi' is available again. 'Yuki Yama' is a hard one to top as far as appearance for a mikawa type.

Hi @emery. I lost my first 'Kumoi nishiki' a few year back, thinking it was because of me. I did leave it out unprotected but I will blame it on the cold now. I will protect this one.

As far as 'Hana chiru sato' and 'Wakoh nishiki', I'll watch them closely. They will be besties for a couple years. I was impressed with 'Wakoh nishiki' last year. I hope it continue to grow well.

I really like circinatum but they seem to prone to mildew here for me :( I lost 'Baby Buttons' in 2020. 'Monroe' did well last year and I can't remember the other one I have. Im really excited about 'Sunglow'!

E, I've had my eye on 'Berrima Bridge' for a while.

I’m lucky, I live in the native range of Acer circinatum so it grows very well here. My ‘Pacific Fire’ is much more beautiful than my coral bark palmatum, probably for that reason.

I need to take a look at ‘Sunglow’ since we have similar tastes!

I recently visited a nursery and scored shopping list:

    2 Japanese Princess
    1 Mystic Mikawa
    1 Mayday

I'm waiting for the Snow Kitten release on Mr. Maple, I need one. Does anyone know if Snow Kitten is the same as Yuki Yama?
