i have these Bearded maple seeds i bought from Sheffield's. collector said they are from 2016 and are from the vladivostok area (near russo korean border). they soaked for 36 hours, and are now really plump. ill update this thread when i take the seeds out of stratification , which is around christmas.

Acer griseum, Acer Campestre, Acer Glabrum, fraxinus americana, Fraxinus latifolia and Parrotia Persica are now warm stratifying . “Ws” means warm stratification, “cs” means cold stratification

Good job @Soumil Yarlagadda , I look forward to seeing your results.

One slight area of concern I have; how wet is the media in the stratification bags? It may be reflections from the flash or whatever that is fooling me, but it looks in some of the pictures to be much wetter than ideal... aim for damp rather than wet.

Some of them are actually bit too wet.. you are right. I will dry some of these bags out. Also the medium is just sphangum peat moss, is that a bad idea?

Maples (Montpellier, acer pictum, Trident, Japanese, Kawakami, Devil, Shantung, Bearded, Amur) and other maples species, are cold stratifying.

    Should be fine.

Can't think of anything else to add just now, looks like you have it under control.

Hey Soumil, looks as though things are going great with these batches. I agree it looked a bit wet, but sounds as though you've fixed that up.

A word of caution again about common names again: A. barbinerve is usually (Hardy) called the Pointed-Leaf Maple. Anyway, with the binomial name it's clearer. I don't know about the US, but in Western EU, barbinerve is very rare indeed; although not so much in Eastern EU. I expect ours will probably kick the bucket over the winter, it has really suffered in the drought, and was recently planted.

Acer pictum ssp. mono is usually called the "Painted Maple." The wings on those seeds look quite small for ssp mono, it will be interesting to see what you get. Of course with 6 year old seed germination would normally be down, but you do seem to have a touch for it. IIRC for best germination one is supposed to sow fresh A. buergerianum seed (Dirr?)

Cheers and keep at it! -E

Just checked on the acer campestre that is warm stratifying(its been a week), and of course, there is mold. Im washing them in running water for 5 minutes to wash the mold off, is that a good idea? Anyone got some tips to kill off or prevent more mold during warm stratification? Because these things have a month of warm stratification to do. can i spray or apply anything in the medium to kill the mold? @emery @Acerholic @LoverOfMaples @0soyoung @maf

Acer glabrum (rocky mountain maple) these seeds have been in warm stratification for around a week. nothing interesting, 100 days more warm strat to go and then after that 90 more days of cold stratification. exhaustively long. these seeds are extrenmely hard to germinate, on par with acer griseum. you could eliminate the warm stratification by soaking the seeds in aerated water for 2 weeks, but ill go with the more traditional way. last 2 photos are examples of the species from the internet.

I'm guessing that's the real A. glabrum Torrey 1828, in the picture anyway? Is this more Sandeman's? Very pretty, I think, though not considered very ornamental. Really complicated to get hold of here in EU, I have never managed to get one although I think it would grow well. There are a few arboreta that have them, but not many. I received a little A. glabrum var douglasii last winter, it looks right but not sure it will survive. These are more common anyway.

    A. glabrum var. neomexicanum is one of my "fetish" maples to find, but I have never even seen it.

the tree is glabrum var. douglassi, the coastal variety. much less tolerant of cold winters, it grows in the pacific coast. seeds are from idaho

Ah, I see in the pic now, the leaves in back are mostly 3-lobed, only the one right in front has 5, which caused my error. Yes, var. douglasii is less hardy by all accounts, though I thought it got pretty cold in Idaho!

copper. Bordeaux mix, or other. I usually add a few drops to the stratifying substrate.

Hi @Soumil Yarlagadda, I'm not sure but I need to figure that too before I miss out. I'll let you know what I come up with if no one else get you the answer before hand.

"payment of £5 for UK and European destinations, and £8 for the rest of the world."
