Identification: maple disease/fungi?

    I recently discovered, what I assume is some disease, attacking a maple tree. Two pictures are attached.

    White spots have formed on the tree, which are predominantly located on one side. All the leaves on that side wilted and fell off.

    Any assistance with identification and/or treatment (if any) would be greatly appreciated.

    The white spots just look like lichen to me. As such inoffensive. I wonder what the large wounds in the first picture are related to. Probably not the cause, but maybe part of the issue? Otherwise can't guess what might be causing the leaves to die off, but if the spots are indeed lichen it has nothing to do with that.
