Due to loss of several limbs and branches, about 1/3 of tree, this 25 yr old beauty now must be pruned. How do I that? I was told not to prune magnolias, but it must be done. Suckers have sprouted everywhere where branches snapped and branches are very top heavy. I appreciate advice.

consider hiring a professional, a 25 year old tree sounds like it might be significant in size. Also, a professional should be able to make the best cuts for the tree as well as have the specialized tools to do so. Shop around and get a few estimates. Ask the estimator if they know what (who) things like the branch collar, branch bark ridge, CODIT and Alex Shigo or Ed Gilman are. ;)
