Magnolia pruning

Discussion in 'Magnoliaceae' started by robertsumner77063, Sep 5, 2005.

  1. I am not a botanist. I have a baby magnolia that is still in the container. I have had the tree for about a month. The tree is in great condition. At the base of the tree about 2 inches up from the roots, there is a lot of new growth. I am wondering if I am suppose to be plucking/removing this new growth as I see it to encourage more growth at the top.

Also, when the tree blooms, the garden center told me to prune the old blooms. Is this true?

    Thanks,
    Robert

    Hi Robert,

You don't say which magnolia you have. Some grow with multiple trunks and some with a single trunk. I have lots of info to share, but you aren't registered and I have no way of knowing if you will return.

Remove basal sprouts if grafted or has a tree (standard) shape you wish to retain, with an elevated head on a clear stem. No need to remove spent flowers, that was completely erroneous. Bad advice from garden centers is mentioned rather often during internet discussions.
