I'm working on another club moss, Lycopodium nummularifolium Blume. The synonym is Phlegmariurus nummularifolius (Blume) Ching. The original plant was published in Enumeratio Plantarum in1828. This one is a tough one to find scientific information on but if anyone knows anything, especially if you have access to the scientific description, I'd really appreciate the help. This one is apparently found on several websites Incorrectly as Lycopodium nummularifolia Blume This note has been added: The correct name is Huperzia nummulariifolia (Blume) Chambers, Jermy & Crabbe. You can learn more in my third post below.
This message just came back from Dr. Moran at the New York Botanical Garden. Dear Steve, You are correct: the basionym is Lycopodium nummulariifolium Blume. I suggest using Huperzia because that is being done by most pteridologists these days. Huperzia differs from the other Lycopodium segregates most conspicuously by its equally forked branches. Best wishes, Robbin Robbin C. Moran The New York Botanical Garden 200th Street & Southern Blvd. Bronx, NY 10458-5126 U.S.A. So it would appear that to science, the correct basionym (base name) is Lycopodium nummulariifolium Blume.
As it frequently turns out, I was again wrong on the true species name! With the help of Dr. Robbin C. Moran, Ph.D., Curator of Ferns at The New York Botanical Garden I've learned the true species name is Huperzia nummulariifolia (Blume) Chambers, Jermy & Crabbe with a basionym of Lycopodium nummularifolium Blume. Due to recent advances in botanical science members of the genera Lycopodium are being reclassified. The plant can be found on the internet by a variety of names, some not truly scientific but apparently just made up. Synonyms include Phlegmariurus nummularifolius and some of the non-scientific names found on the internet include Huperzia nummularifolius (non-scientific) and Lycopodium nummularifolia (non-scientific). Here's a preview of what I've learned so far but this is incomplete. The plant has the common names of Tassel Fern, Club Moss, and Fir Moss, but is not a fern! http://www.exoticrainforest.com/Huperzia nummulariifolia pc.html
