Lost Maples State Natural Area was established to protect relict stands of Bigtooth Maple (Acer grandidentatum, locally called Uvalde Maple) along the Sabinal River near Vanderpool. These maples are near their peak fall color; their close alliance with Sugar Maple is evident in the images at the main website and the Fall Foliage Report.
