It shows up every year on an old beech tree in our yard that has a big crack in the trunk. Last year we finally decided to taste it. It really seems like an alternative to seafood. Sautéed with butter, it tasted like scallops.
Good morning Nik, they sell this grated and dried at health food shops; increases oxygen to the brain they say. What a weired looking mushroom though!! Do take a photo of it on the tree next year? I bet it looks quite alien!! Interesting thread Nik. D
I forgot to post this earlier, we did not see the mushroom on the tree in our yard this year. Probably because it was badly twisted and cracked by very strong winds. But here is a different beech tree that supported this mushroom, way out of reach, about 12 feet up.
It is back! In our yard. About 7 feet up, but I managed to collect it. To be cooked tomorrow.. (The plate diameter is about 30 cm.)
