I have korean maple in container and wondering how hardy is it. I live in Calgary and this maple is said to be hardy down to zone 3 and can take full sunlight.
Wonderlen, if you decide to try growing this, please stop by next spring to let us know whether it survived. I believe that hardiness ratings are in many cases based on limited information, since so few gardeners in far northern climates have actually tried growing a given plant (and even fewer have publicized their success). I'm no expert on maples, but with bamboos I've seen a marked change in hardiness ratings -- with many more plants being rated as suitable for colder climates -- as more people actually try growing the things. I can't say my own experiments have always yielded happy results -- a tree at (or beyond) the northernmost limits of its range can be a miserable specimen indeed -- but it's a lot of fun to look outside and see unusual species that nobody else is growing.
Just follow up to the post. My Korean Maple did survive the zone 3 winter. A few minor tip dieback, but nothing serious. Of course i still careful about minitoring on feeding, watering throughout the year. Hopefully it will be a graceful tree some day.
Good to hear how hardy your Korean maple is. In your first post you say it is in a container, I take it the plant has been transplanted it into the ground since then? Valuable information for our more northern friends.
Yeah, the first year i just left the container outside I totally neglet it through the winter. I was surprise it survive, so i transplanted into the ground. So basically first winter in container and second year in the ground.
