We have a 5 year old Japanese Maple in our front yard and it is now a beautiful and spreading tree that we want to keep. However, the recent snow has caused severe damage and the branches were caught under the snow and then with added weight of additional snowfall, the trunk has split at the apex of the trunk where all the branches spread out to form the crown. Can I fix this? It is only about 3-4 inches deep and though I know it is a long shot, I am hoping that there is someway to bind or seal the wound to give the tree a chance to recover.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have had some success with tying such a split trunk and keeping it tied until it repairs itself. A photograph, however, would help greatly in advancing a realistic opinion

Thank you Sam. As soon as the downpour lightens I will get a photo for you and post it in this thread. I am glad to hear that there is hope for our tree!
