First time post: We recently planted a Bloodgood Japanese maple and 3 weeks into it's new home white splotches are starting to appear. I breezed through most of the common JM diseases but can't find anything close. The tree sits amongst a wide range of healthy plants that are not showing any signs of disease. The attached JM replaced a prior JM that died a few years ago (something I wrote off as root disease but never fully determined). Has anyone seen this? Have any suggestions? I'm about to transplant it again into a whiskey barrel just to rule out soil problems. -J
That is a very localised issue and wouldn't give me any problems. You should remove the affected leaf if it is upsetting you. I think your plant will be fine, but obviously if it gets any worse I am way off the mark Personally, I wouldn't replant it, but would leave it alone to settle in
I agree with whis4ey - I don't think its anything. One unsolicited piece of advice/comment - Bloodgood gets pretty large pretty fast - something to keep in mind given the proximity of the deck and what appears to be another maple to the left. I'd imagine that with careful pruning over time, you'll be OK though.
This looks exactly like some of the leaves on my baby Purple Ghost (and to a lesser extent on a larger Yezo Nishiki from the same nursery). I'm not really worried because on the whole the plants look healthy and happy and vigorous. So it's a relief to hear that experienced Acerphiles like whis4ey and Worthy42 aren't worried either.
I have the same issues as above; however, many more leaves are affected. My Bloodgood was only planted (by landscape professionals) 2 weeks ago!
