Hi guys, I have a small south-east facing garden and would love to have a Japanese Maple in a container on my deck. Ideally i would like one which grows to a maximum of 5ft. Is there one which fits the bill? I have been looking at a "Rising Sun" (Osakazuki) but have heard differing reports on how large they grow. Hope you can help. Matt
Osakazuki is more 25/30 ft ;acer palmatum Crimson King ,Ellen or Koto hime are good for your use.alex
Matt, the scale of the container is going to effect the scale of the tree. An Osakazuki could be kept in a 10 or 15 gal container for quite a while before outgrowing the pot.
There are many Japanese Maples out there to fit the bill. I have Crimson Queen in a Wine Barrel and has been there for at least 6 years. Not even close to 5 feet but then it is a weeping variety and is tough as nails. I have since acquired many other varieties since they are babies i don't know their real potential. Usually at the websites that carry grafted JM's let you know what the mature size will be. Since you are in England the rate of growth will vary compared to mine which is in desert country. High heat in summer and light snow in winter. Not a lot of rain or mist. So my tree sits on my northfacing deck with morning sun and sheltered afternoon sun due to a lattice with clematis climbing on it. The clematis are in the ground below the deck as the wine barrel is on the deck 2ft higher.
