japanese maple roots

    I had to cut some roots out in order to put a deck in. The roots were only about an inch in diameter about 4 feet from the tree and not in the direction of the main branches. Do you think I did any damage?

    Yes, you did: you cut some roots!!!.;o))

    Everything depends on what you mean by 'some': 'some' a lot or 'some' a little.
    If it is 'some' a little, then the tree will recover ok, maybe with some drying of leaves in the side of the removed roots. Also if you disturbed the other roots, then the tree may not like it. The point is: the more stresses you pile up at the same time (i.e.: heat, drought, roots cut, roots disturbed, and.... you name it), the higher the chances your tree will suffer die-back leading, in the worst-case scenario, to total loss.
