Hi everyone - I've been avidly reading through the archives of posts to the 'Maples' board & really enjoying the information & pictures contained in it. I live in Oregon, about 40 miles SE of Portland & have recently been bitten by the JP bug! My sister has a lovely little Acer palmatum in her yard (yes, I plan to take pictures) about 4 feet high, growing under big Oak trees. It's really beautiful & the previous owner to her property was an avid plant person. But we don't know the name of it! Imagine that! :-) In the spring, it has bright red-orange leaves on red bark & as the season wears on it goes to a salmon shade & then a light green leaf. Very pretty. In the fall it turns another shade of darker salmon & bright yellow (If I remember correctly!) In Vertree's 3rd ed. I find one called 'Chishio' & one called 'Chishio Improved' & the descriptions are very similar to her tree. Does anyone have a photo of a more mature tree? Hers is about 10 years old as far as we know. Thanks for any help & I'll get the photos for you soon! Wanda
Here are some photos taken 4/21/05: The first one is showing the placement (under oak trees). The second pic shows the leaves up closer. From a distance it looks like a Mollis azalea in bloom! Wanda
And here are some photos taken 5/3/05. The leaves have opened up more. I will be taking some photos throughout the rest of the season. And I'll try to remember to take a ruler with me next time! Thanks for looking! Wanda
Thank you, Andre, for trying to help me identify this lovely little tree! Here are some more pictures - taken today. One is of the general color of the leaves now (they change almost daily) & the other 2 are branches (front & back) scanned directly into the computer. I will post the pictures of the leaf front & back with the next post to keep the download size small. I'm on a dial-up connection, so I know how sllllooowww it can be. :-) Wanda
And here are pictures (scanned in directly) of the front & back of one of the more mature leaves. Left is leaf front, right is back of same leaf. Wanda
Chishio (blood in japanese) is supposed to be "brilliant scarlet when unfolding" with a tinge of orange. So it's difficult to be sure at this time but yours seems to be a Chishio. Post some other pictures in fall and we'll try to find out. ;-)
Yes, I plan to do that! Thanks! There is a photo of 'Chisio Improved in the Maple Photo Album - I found these photos by doing a search on "chisio". I'm not sure how to link to that post. Any tips would be appreciated. I think my sister's is the same tree. Wanda
