I am looking for information on Cedar Avenue, Nikko Japan specifically how the trees (Sugi) would have been planted / transplanted during that time of Japan's history (about 1630 AD). I have info from Nikko tourism website but don't know where else to look. Any information/suggestions greatly appreciated. Researching children's book. Thanks

Sargent (1894; The Forest Flora of Japan) recorded that a Daimyo (prince) who was too poor to donate a stone lantern at the funeral of the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616) at Nikkō Tōshō-gū, but requested instead to be allowed to plant an avenue of Sugi, 'that future visitors might be protected from the heat of the sun'. The offer was accepted; the avenue is over 65 km long, and 'has not its equal in stately grandeur'.
