    Hi all
I know this may not be proper to ask in here. But I was asked by
a garden elf( my nieghbours 4 year old )
How come pumpkins become Jackolanterns at Halloween?

Any help would be Great/ as she is a budding gardener.
I let her have space in the front yard this year and she grew carrots /raddish/ lettuce/and 6 corn plants by her self.

    Thanks
    Best Regards Doug

Well it seems that pumpkins became Jack O'Lanterns when the Irish came to North America. In the "old country" they were made from turnips and potatoes. But where did the story of the Jack O'Lantern come from? (Not sure how much of this story I would share with a four year old)

    History of the Jack O'Lantern
    .

    Thanks again Eric

I tried to explain about the "Old Country" useing potatoe and turnips. She asked who would see them if they were in ground?

I found a copy of Charlie Browns Halloween with Snoopy and the Great pumpkin. It Clicked
