I notice some of my bean seed packets recommend using an inoculant. I have
tried a number of local gardening centres and none of them carry it. Does anyone
know where I might find it in Southern Ontario? Do I really need to use it? I
have grown beans before with no problem. I have very good soil.

I would not bother. They just want to sell you something.

The inoculant they are recommending is an Endomycorrhizae that symbiots with grasses, annuals and veggies.
You can find a shovel full in any Organic lawn or Natural Grassland, there are products on the market but its up to you to decide to pay up or dig down.

If your going to be using chemical fertilzers, tilling around the plants or using Fungicides in the area its not worth inoculating any of your plants.

But...... if you have a healthy soil food web it will amaze you the difference a little freindly fungi will do.

a product to investigate is Myke, it consists of both Endomycorrhizae and Ectomycorrhizae that can inoculate most all species with the exception of Ericaceae, Brassicaceae, and Chenopodiaceae family, and Larix spp.
A bag will go a long way
