Hi, My daughter and I discovered that our indoor ivy was suffering from tiny bugs. They look like little brown growths on the plant and we needed to use her microscope to see that they were actually bugs. Please let us know how we might rid ourselves of these insects.

    thanks, Doo-Beans

    Hi Doo-beans,

I am not all that knowledgeable about pests, but the first thing I would try is one of the environmentally friendly pesticides sprays for houseplants, or use a dillute sollution of dishsoap. If the bugs seem to have a hard shell, it might be scale. It is hard to get through the tough coat of scale - wiping them off with a dillute sollution of rubbing alcohol usually takes care of them. Most treatments don't kill eggs, so any treatment usually needs to be repeated after a week and possibly a third time. Also check other plants for signs of spread.

    Good luck,

Ivy indoors tends to be a host of spidre mites. look for minute webbing between the leaf and stem, and tones of tiny little specks of dust that move on their own. raising humidity can help, soapy water can help.

Thanks, there is some minute webbing around some of the leaves. I think they are spider mites. I washed the plant in a solution of mild dish soap and water. I will re-wash it, though, I hadn't thought about it hosting eggs.
