I just purchased 2 dwarf musa acuminata and have been reading up on their care. I plan them to grow them indoor all year, but am having trouble settling on a setup. First off I am considering a warm mist humidifier to place between them. I figure that between that and my reef aquarium, it should keep the humidy and temp up in the 50%and 75deg area. Would placing a humifier so close to the foliage cause any problems? Secondly, since they are next to a window that doesn't recieve the most intense light, I am planning on purchasing LED grow lights. The ones I have sourced from China all seem to have about a 7-1 Red-Blue ratio. My concern is that all of these lights seem to focus on budding (IE marijuana cultivation) and skimp on the foliage spectrum. I also don't like the intense red/purple light that radiates from them. The suppliers do seem open to diode customization, maybe a 25%blue 30%4000K white and 45%red? Third, I want to maximize the fruiting potential of the plant. I have read many different suggections on what ferts to use. What would be the best thing to use to feed and put it in the right mood to fruit once they hit maturity?
Tell us more about the room you are using. This is not a green house right? It's in your home? How many windows, facing which directions? I think plain old cool white fluorescent bulbs are enough for supplemental lighting. Fertilizer wise I would worry more about when over what to use. Just use something balanced, at the right time. The following was advice from a gardener not a horticulturist. But I believe you have a challenge ahead of you getting fruit without a greenhouse.
Check out this forum; everything bananas from people all over the world who do it for fun (ok, obsession) and for a living. http://www.bananas.org/search.php?searchid=1134538 They can help with lighting and fertilizers etc.
