Hi there, Am looking for a JM to plant in front of the house near the front porch. I don't need a big monster, hence the reason why I looked at this cultivar. I also like the colour changes and the fact that it only gets to about 15-20ft high. Is this a better option, or is there any other one out there that is a fast grower, and has beautiful colours? Also can they be planted in a pot, instead of the ground? cheers
I think most maples can be grown in a pot and they make excellent bonsai's. I even grow my Red Maple Acer Rubrum in a pot, and they can grow to more than 60 foot. You just have to keep trimming them down to the appropriate height, that's all. You also need to ensure that you root prune them every couple of years.
Even a vigorous laceleaf maple like that one will take decades to get that big. The main issue there may be which one would be hardy over the long term.
According to TREES OF SEATTLE - SECOND EDITION one in Seattle had reached 22' (6.7m) by 2006. (Planting date and size at planting not indicated).
my Butterfly after 5 years is similar to the Sam ,for Giordano Giladerlli is 2m ,5/6 feet after 10 years .......ciao e buon 2008
Indeed! :) But even still, no leaf burning? Actually for the last 5 or so years the sun has been much stronger here. Something has changed in the flow from the ocean, it's been considerably drier in the summer. Used to be able to count on many days with light misty rain and warm, the sun showing up around 4 pm in time to make rainbows. Anyway although butterfly has long been widely available (it's the variegated palmatum every garden centre stocks) I've never gotten around to planting, as I thought I needed a really shady spot... -E
I have never noticed any leaf burn on this tree Now ... Shirasawanum 'Aureum' is a different matter .........
my butterfly is full sun , is resistent but after 3/4 years planted ,in autum 2007 i see for the first autum beautiful autum coulor and small number of leaves burned ,Shirasawanum Aureum is partial shade ,and haven't problem...but are the only 5/6 maples beautiful last autum ,because no rained for 4 mounths in my country..
