I recently purchased a plant labelled Philodendron 'Silver Streak'. A photo of this plant can be seen on www.kraftgardens.com/products/photos/philodendron_silver_streak.jpg . I would like to know the actual botanical name. Is anyone familiar with this plant?
Iwas wondering if 'Silver Streak' is the botanical name or just a common name ie: Ficus benjamina is usually called the "weeping Fig."
From the notation I would say Philodendron 'Silver Streak' is the botanical name with Silver Streak being the name of the particular cultivar.
If the name is in apostrophies (ie: 'Silver Streak') it is considered a cultivar name or trade name, not a species name. Species names are rarely so descriptive unless they are in Latin. 'Silver Streak' is likely a name given the plant by a tissue culture company. Many philodendrons are now grown as tissue cultures (clones) and companies give them cute names in order to attempt to trademark the name. Even many well known botanical specimens are now sold under trade names.
