Ideas about this patchy lawn?

This lawn is lush and green in all places, except for this small patch. The lawn was installed several years ago, via laying down sod.

The patch was doing okay in the summer, but now it is sandy / gravelly. As seen in the second pic, it is located under the corner of the deck, at the bottom of the stairs.

Could it be that water from the deck is hitting it when it rains? Or could it be, as suggested to me, that the lawn's automatic sprinkler is not hitting this area? Or perhaps something else?

Looks like it could be water from the deck, contaminated with preservatives leached out of the wood in the decking.

could be a leaching issue. could also be the amount of sunlight - maybe not enough for that type of grass.
