I came across this at a well known hardware store last week. It was just labeled as 'acer patio variegated', I've not seen one much like it before - it's got a sort of spreading/semi cascade habit but the sort of speckling effect I've seen on 'odd' looking maples which were labelled as Ukigumo in the past. They had 20% off so for £40 I decided to take it and I'll see what it does for a while, might end up selling it on eventually, but my curiosity got the better of me as I want to work out what it might be?
This appears to be a top-worked (Lollipops standard) Ukigumo that has been heavily fertilised. However, the photo on the label shows a Shirazz, which makes the identification quite confusing.
That makes sense. I thought it looked a bit like some Ukigumo I've seen before, which doesn't look much like my own, but that may be due to the heavy fertilisation as you say. I also haven't seen one with a graft that high up before (I usually avoid high grafts even on weeping cultivars)... I'll just grow it on slowly for a couple of years, put it in better soil and then sell it on or gift it eventually.
