I couldn't find this one in my book. It was found in a mostly deciduous forest in coastal North Carolina. It was about 2" across. Thanks!
It concerns some species belonging to the large genus Russula (Russulaceae). These gilled mushroooms are very difficult to indentify, even to a specialist. In English, they are usually called simply as "russulas" though somebody has created the name "brittle cap" for them. Please, see the following information: http://www.mushroomexpert.com/russula.html Cheers Harri Harmaja http://www.fmnh.helsinki.fi/users/harmaja/about_myself.htm
