I am looking ahead to Spring and planning to deadhead some Hydrangea plants. They are large-leaf mop-heads. I think the best time to do this is in the Spring, but I'd like to narrow down the window as much as possible.

Anybody here have a rule of thumb for when to dead head Hydrangeas in the Lower Mainland?
Around Mother's Day (like when tomatoes are put out)?
    Just before new buds appear?
When the risk of frost is over?
    etc.?
