hello! i hope your all doing well. i was wondering how i should start growing mushrooms. i have a small garden and i was wondering if i could mix some mushroom spawn into the soil, with some extra organic material. if i can do that, i was also wondering what type of spawn to use. should i use grain, or sawdust? if i cant mix it into my soil then what could i grow them on outdoors? thank you.
Hi @Ilman - For growing directly in your garden, in soil, it is likely that the garden giant / wine cap mushrooom (Stropharia rugoso-annulata) would be a good choice. Happily you have several local and reputable spawn providers on Vancouver Island to obtain spawn from. Other options for outdoor growing include the kinds of mushrooms you would grow by drilling holes in logs and inserting plug spawn, such as shiitake (Lentinula edodes) or Maitake (Grifola frondosa) and others. And many other species options on various substrates that you can grow indoors or outdoors: Reputable suppliers provide information on the growing requirements for each species. Here are some growers local to you: Grow Mushrooms Canada, Sayward, Vancouver Island - https://growmushroomscanada.ca Guycelium, Nanaimo, Vancouver Island - https://www.facebook.com/Guycilium/ Coastal Mushroom, Saanich, Vancouver Island - https://www.instagram.com/coastal_mushroom/ and there are others I strongly recommend not ordering online - from unknown companies - as there are a number of scams, snakeoil companies selling false product, taking advantage of the popularity of mushrooms. Check reviews on companies first and/or local reputation. Plus buying local is always good :-)
your very helpful! i saw you on my other post, so thanks for helping me with both questions! ill go check out coastal mushrooms and once again, very informative. have a great day!
