Hi, My name is Jodie and I am new to this forum and I am a new gardner. I just bought a fig tree and need some direction on how to care for it. The person that I got it from said that it would grow up to 20 feet if planted in the ground. But, after reading some of your blogs, I am not sure what to do. From what I have been reading, I could do anything from burrying it in the winter time or wraping it, covering it and putting in the shop out side. Can you just plant it in the ground and watch it grow? In the winter put multch over the roots to keep them warm? What do I need to do? I live in NewMexico so the winters are somewhat mild although, they do get cold during the nights. So, any advice would be great! Thank you, Jodie
Re: Winter care for fig tree in your climate you can keep it outside all year, however, how cold do the winters get, and is there a lot of thawing, and freezing ? this is what kills the fig. so i suggest planting it near the house, or in a courtyard. it will then be fine.
