I've been searching for a Ficus lyrata and can't find it anywhere. My sister's boyfriend's mother has a fiddle leaf ficus. So I thought of just taking from her plant and propagating it. How would I go about propagating this fiddle leaf ficus?
Dear Moonlitpath it is very simple, through air Layering you can propagate this plants easily here in University of Karachi we use this method for the multiplication of plants and keep the mother plant healthy. Always chose the one to two year old branch for air layering Then remove the bark, please be careful and don’t damage the cambium layer as it is the most actively dividing cells Then take some moist soil and place around the exposed area and then cover the area through black plastic and tightly clip from top and bottom of the plastic The most appropriate season for the air layering is the rainy season because it makes the soil moist other wise if soil become dry then the chances of rooting is almost zero The rooting start around two to three weeks depends on the growing period of the plants. I hope you will get you own plants Haider Abbas KUBG, University of Karachi
Air layering for Ficus is a good idea if time is not a limiting factor. If it is, consider layering or simple cuttings with IBA rooting hormone as next best attempts.
