So I decide to grow hostas from seed which seems to be very easy and fun. My question how long before I might start seeing characteristics of the parent plant that I collected from, if any? Mother Babies
Good evening D, we have tried this and they do grow quite easily, but they hardly ever, if at all look like the parent. A bit like our Maple seeds. This is all I can offer on this one I'm afraid D.
Growing from seed - that’s an impressive project ! I wonder how commercial growers ensure that their flock of baby « Sum & Substance » or « stained glass » or « Midwest Magic » are true to type Do they make new plants by division or seed? I like close-to-instant results so I divide mine with a shovel and pop the new small ones in the garden ASAP That said - I am lazy and usually forget (remember to forget?) to label the divisions right away - I just know I like certain colors and combinations
Good evening Georgia, not lazy at all. It's a bit like air layering with maples. You then get the clone of the parent. I fully understand when you say about forgetting labels. We have all been there , lol.
Like @Acerholic said, not lazy at all. That's the only way I know how to clone one. Ive never thought about the commercial growers. They must be doing some crazy division.
Have you ever gotten anything interesting? I think I see a few that will have some type of variation but I'm not sure yet.
Not really D. They turned out very ordinary tbh. We were hoping for something special or some brand new variety. But no. But you may do, so I wish you good luck.
