Can someone please tell me what I've got here? I have no idea how to take care of them. They look like they could be really beautiful...I'm terrible with plants and I want to keep them alive. Thanks! -Shawn
http://morningdewtropical.com/images/gallery/Succulents--Kalanchoe-Thrys.jpg this has been identified.
The 2nd one is more likely Kalanchoe luciae ssp. luciae, as Kalanchoe thyrsiflora is not often found in cultivation (although that may have changed). The flower will be the identifier for you. I think yours could use more sun. :) I guess I'll see if the pix loaded properly or not. Here's my Kalanchoe luciae ssp. luciae growing its flower stalk, top view of leaves & detail of the blooms. Hope this helps!
Kalanchoe thyrsiflora is widely available in cultivation and I think it's a better ID. Do a Google search and several sites will come up offering it for sale.
Thank you, L.plant! There are many pix online misidentified as Kalanchoe thyrsiflora, as well as nurseries selling them. You will only know you have the real deal if your flowers look like those in the following link, rather than like those in my pix. http://www.cactus-succulents.com/Kalanchoe-thyrsiflora-2.jpg This CA nursery site explains a bit about the mix-up: http://www.smgrowers.com/products/plants/plantdisplay.asp?strSearchText=Kalanchoe&plant_id=1702&page=
Thanks for the info. It seems that all the information I can find classifies the Kalanchoe species in the initial photo as Thyrsiflora: (top 10 Kalanchoe sales): http://www.flowercouncil.org/uk/news/fpnews/Flowerplantnews2004/04_mrt_kal_ad.asp Is this a new taxonomic re-classification and most growers haven't caught on yet? Thanks
No, this has not be reclassified, L.plant. Many, including companies that sell this plant, misidentify it regularly. The wider leaves with the slight indentation at the end tell me this is more likely K. luciae than K. thyrsiflora. The leaves of K. thyrsiflora are more oval. I don't know if this will ever flower grown as a houseplant, but they would be the determining factor. Granted, the plant will look different with varying growing conditions, but I do believe the poster's pic is that of Kalanchoe luciae ssp. luciae.
