This plant is over 5 feet tall, has a burgundy stem and leaves, and looks as if it carries its seeds in burr-like pods around the stem. At the top of the plant, the burgundy leaves start to turn red, followed by this ribbon-like 'flower' at the top. I live in zone 4 in Illinois, USA. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Thanks so much for the ID - right on the mark. It also helped ID another plant of the same variety for me .. Joseph's Coat. Now I can't wait to get seeds for next year and plant them everywhere.

Can't wait until next spring when I can get some of these into the garden. Hope you can find some by then.

Well, silly me. Then I guess you're starting to look for seeds right now, unlike me who has to wait another 6 months. Wonder if online companies might provide a source for buying seeds? Getting plants would be easier, but seeds might give you a challenge.

    Happy shopping. : )

My understanding that Josephs's Coat is not a single variety, but a group of decorative cultivars. We used to grow the culinary varieties - it's a great vegetable.
