I received this lil plant as a gift only a few months ago and I think I was over watering it bc towards the end of november the leaves started turning brown and I thought it needed more water and then it started looking worse so I did some research and it appears I had been over watering it so now I'm only watering it once a month but it looks so pitiful ????? help

Since I don't see a saucer under the pot I'm guessing it has no hole at the bottom?
If so root rot may have killed it.

No it does i had just moved it to the counter for the picture - it normally sits on my table so that it can get some sun it's been so cloudy due to snow here I want it to get the most it can

Another possibility is freeze damage as one other poster left their's outdoors assuming it could take the cold. In some cases just a brief car ride or trip from one heated building to another can be enough to kill a plant.

Mmm no - once the temp dropped below 70ish I quit taking it outside
I just wonder if it will revive or how I check or what I do about root rot

Just remove the root ball from the pot and smell the soil. If you detect a sour odor it's likely rotted.
In that case replace the soil with a gritty cactus soil which may help it re-root if it's not into the woody base.
Once the wood is involved most likely nothing will help.
